far infrared saunas are finally getting the mainstream media attention they deserve. Last month, medical expert Dr. Mehmet Oz introduced Americans to infrared saunas on The Oprah Winfrey Show. In a special segment titled “Extreme Life Extension,” Dr. Oz unveiled several technological marvels designed to enhance and extend life—one of which was a Sunlight Sauna. He and Ms. Winfrey actually sat in the sauna while he talked very specifically about the unique health benefits far infrared saunas provide. In case you missed it, we want to fill you in on the highlights.

Dr. Oz first pointed out that far infrared saunas are different than regular saunas. “Here’s the key: This infrared sauna works a little differently than a normal sauna because it makes the same rays that come from the sun and filters out the UV radiation leaving only infrared radiation, which is lightly absorbed into your skin. So without heating you up in the external environment too much, it heats the body up,” he explained. Dr. Oz noted why this feature of heating the body is significant, “The reason that’s important is that we’ve actually shown that people who take saunas a couple times a week actually drop their blood pressure.” The environment is much more comfortable too. “The reason that infrared saunas work reasonably well is because they don’t hurt your lungs if you take a deep breath. People can be comfortable here,” Dr.  Oz said. This is important news for anyone with blood pressure issues or who has trouble with traditional saunas.

But there’s more…

Sunlight Saunas are an excellent tool for detoxification in addition to being a great support to those who are not able to get the benefit of exercise—those with a disability, injury or difficulty being mobile. “So folks who can’t exercise, for example, can at least do saunas to raise their metabolism a little bit. And, of course, when they sweat, they sweat out toxins through the skin. So one thing you always want to do after you’ve been in an infrared sauna is to wash yourself to get whatever toxins are on your skin off, “ Dr. Oz said.

After sitting for a short while in the Sunlight Sauna unit, Ms. Winfrey was ready to get out—that was—until Dr. Oz told her and the audience about the potential weight loss benefits with regular use of an infrared sauna. Dr. Oz said, “It increases blood circulation.  The reason that’s important is that it gets your heart to beat faster and it burns calories.” Ms.  Winfrey smiled as she suddenly decided to stay seated, and playfully said, “Oh, so THIS is what you mean? You can burn 700 calories just by sitting here?” Yes, sitting and enjoying an infrared sauna can actually support your weight loss efforts!

DPHL has been reporting on the health benefits of far infrared sauna therapy for a long time. In addition to the life extension features Dr. Oz discussed on The Oprah Winfrey Show, we’ve covered how it helps support those who suffer from fibromyalgia, arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and even autism. The circuclatory and blood pressure lowering benefits are well documented. In fact, Sunlight Saunas is a partner with the American Heart Association. And let’s not forget that one of the best benefits of regular use of a Sunlight Sauna is relaxation. In today’s world with so many demands on the individual, stress reduction is more important than ever. Incorporating far infrared heat therapy into your health routine may not only extend your life, it can enhance its quality today.

Far-Infrared Saunas Help Reverse Autism

BH Staff / March 21, 2013

. . . everyone, including children, should be doing saunas – especially those with autism

Toxins are one of the two causes of disease, and virtually all Americans are in a state of dangerous toxic overload. Even the most fastidious among us ingest, inhale and absorb health damaging toxins daily. Toxins are especially harmful to children, and high levels of industrial chemicals have been implicated in the rise of many childhood diseases, including autism spectrum disorder. Now estimated to affect 1 in every 68 children, autism has been linked with exposure to harmful chemicals, including in utero.

Fetuses are relatively defenseless against toxins; many protective systems haven’t fully matured, at the same time that development is progressing rapidly, so there is greater chance of toxins doing harm. To a somewhat lesser extent, the same can be said about young children. Also, according to Leo Trasande MD, pediatrician and assistant director of the Center for Children’s Health and the Environment at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, “Pound for pound of body weight, children drink more water, eat more food, and breathe more air than adults, and so they take proportionately more of the toxins in water, food and air into their little bodies.”

In 2004, the parents of the first family to undergo “body burden” testing, a newly-developed Home Articles Resources Q&A Raymond Francis’ Blog Beyond Health technology for measuring chemicals in the human body, were shocked to find their two children, aged 18 months and 5 years, had chemical exposures up 7 times higher than theirs.

This toxic assault on young bodies is having a dramatic impact on children’s health. In testimony given before a US Senate subcommittee in 2006, Dr. Trasande reported that in the preceding 30 years, a number of chronic diseases of environmental origin had become epidemic among American children. Asthma had more than doubled. Birth defects had become the leading cause of infant death, with preterm births increasing 27% since 1981. Childhood cancers were up, including leukemia, brain cancer (up 40%), and testicular cancer among adolescents (up 55%). And neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism, dyslexia, mental retardation and ADHD affected 5-10%, with autism rates increasing more than 20% per year.

Fortunately there is a lot you can do to protect yourself and your children from environmental toxicity. You can buy air filters, water filters, non-toxic bodycare products and organic food. You can take supplements that support detox pathways (call our office at 1-800-250-3063). But of all the detoxification strategies available, regular infrared saunas (such as those offered by Sunlighten) head the list, and they have been found helpful in treating autism in children.

According to author Jill Harrison, writing about using saunas to treat autism, heavy metals like mercury, lead and cadmium which interfere with detoxification pathways, have been found in many children with autism spectrum disorders. She has spoken with parents of such children who see significant improvement in their children’s symptoms after using a sauna to reduce their toxic burden, such as increased eye contact and verbal communication, better sleep patterns, and improved cognitive ability.

Within 30 minutes, an infrared sauna has been shown to increase core body temperature by 2- 3 degrees. Miller cites research which has found mild elevations in core body temperature positively affect behavior in autistic children. Far-infrared waves also increase circulation. According to Miller, children with autism have diminished blood circulation in certain areas of the brain, which means that nutrients and oxygen aren’t getting to where they need to go. Infrared sauna therapy could rectify this situation.

Of course autism, like any other health issue, requires a holistic, lifestyle approach, but it is reassuring to know that infrared saunas have produced tangible results in these difficult to treat children. Given our sorry state of toxic overload, everyone, including children, should be doing regular infrared saunas, especially those with autism. Infrared saunas have literally become a household necessity. I recommend the infrared sauna from Sunlighten.
